Conforming to Societal Standards
How much of what you do is based on what you perceive other people will think about you? We all know that feeling when we are headed out somewhere. Our thoughts running wild with “I hope I look alright”, “Is my hair ok?”, “what if people don’t like me”, “I really need to lose weight”, “what if I say the wrong thing”. Come on now, we have all been there, right?
How many times have you spoken words that were not necessarily true to you because it wasn’t the majority opinion? How many times have you not spoken words because of the majority opinion? Many people have been frowned upon because they felt differently than everyone else.
People spend money on material things like cars, fashion clothes, fancy houses, designer accessories and such because in our society these things have become the measurement of our success. Think about the last time you were driving and saw someone driving a BMW or a Mercedes. What were you thinking? Oh, they must have money. In reality, that may or may not be true. Yes, they may have money or that could be the only thing of value that person owns. Or, I have seen instances where people who have money drive modest vehicles. One thing is for sure, it most certainly doesn’t speak to whether or not that person is successful.
Those things that we externally show to others is in many cases is just an illusion. An illusion that our ego creates to ease us into conforming to societal standards. The ego is that voice in our heads that tell us we have to prove to the world that we think, do, and possess all the things that society deems “correct” and “proper”.
What would it feel like if you were comfortable without having to conform to any standard? True freedom is delving deep within yourself and discovering your true spirit. What are the things that make you the person you are looking back at in the mirror?
True success is knowing and expressing yourself without fear of repercussions of what others may think. Do you like how you look? Do you like the car you drive? Do you like where you live? Great, that is all that matters.
True success is striving to reach out to the world with compassion. It is being truthful to yourself about the things you really want out of your life. So many people are so bound in fear, anger, and distrust that they deprive themselves from things that they really desire but are afraid to let in. Take time out and think about those things that are really important to you.
It is so important that we realize that our biggest ally in life is ourselves. The only person who we have to impress is us. If you can honestly take an inventory of your daily transactions and you know that when you go to sleep at night you did the very best you could that day, that is success. If you know you treated people kindly with no expectations, that is success. If you helped someone today with no expectations, that is success. If you did the right thing even if it felt bad, that is success. If you were good to you today, that is success.
